A juxtaposition is two things placed side by side so that the comparison says something neither would say alone. Put a pharaoh next to a Moon landing and the gap between them stops being a number and starts being a shock.
This site exists to do that once a day, and to be both interesting and genuinely informative while it does. The aim is that you leave knowing something true about when things happened, having enjoyed finding it out.
Each day gives you two things with known dates and a third to place between them. You guess, and then you see how far out you were.
It is not a quiz and there is no score. You are not being tested on whether you know a date. You are being shown that your sense of historical distance is wrong in the same direction as almost everyone else’s, which is more interesting than whether you happened to know the year.
Every guess is kept as an anonymous count, and those counts are shown back to you inside the reveal. Together they build a picture of how people actually judge historical distance, which is a thing that is rarely measured.
